The Lagos State Government on Tuesday announced the flagging off of 114 roads to be constructed in the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State, just as it assured that more roads will be accommodated in the next phase of the project.

The project, which is being fully funded by the State Government, will be constructed two per each LGAs and LCDAs, and is expected to be completed within six months.

Speaking at a joint press briefing addressed by the State’s Ministries of Information and Strategy, Local Government and Community Affairs and the Conference of Executive Secretaries of LGAs and LCDAs, the government disclosed that the project would commence simultaneously in all the Councils within the next seven days.

Giving a background to the project, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde said the mission for the actualization of the project started in October 2015 when Governor Akinwumi Ambode met with the Executive Secretaries of all the 57 Councils in the State, and agreed with them on the need to massively embark on rehabilitation and construction of inner roads across the State.

Ayorinde said the project was designed to complement the massive road construction and rehabilitation going on in the State which culminated in the repair of 300 roads in just seven months, adding that same was in sync with the determination of the current administration to make Lagos work for all.

While corroborating Ayorinde, Chairman of Conference 57, the umbrella body of Executive Secretaries of LGAs and LCDAs in the State, Hon. Kolade Alabi recalled that upon assumption of office, Governor Ambode directed the Council bosses to submit a list of two inner roads in each of the Councils for construction in the first phase of the initiative through open competitive bidding.

Alabi said that in executing the project, a unique model of bottom up infrastructural development and inclusive governance style was adopted, which eventually culminated in the active participation of all the relevant stakeholders in the list of the roads selected for the project.

He said stakeholders such as the Community Development Associations (CDAs) and others were involved in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the project, adding that a transparent process was also adopted in the appointment of contractors that would execute the project.

He said the project was initially designed to gulp N19 billion, but the cost was reduced to N17.5 billion after a transparent bidding process, adding that the contractors have been directed to engage the locals, especially artisans and experts, so as to boost the fight against unemployment and poverty.

Alabi, who is also the Executive Secretary of Bariga LCDA, further disclosed that the 114 roads will be of best standard with walkways, street lights and drainage, adding that contractors have already been mobilized with payment of 30 percent of the total cost.

The remaining cost of the project, according to Alabi, would be released as work progress on the project.

“This is no doubt unprecedented in the history of not just Lagos State, but in the entire nation with all modesty. I salute Governor Ambode’s vision, sense of commitment and dedication to grassroots development. It is indeed taking Lagos to the next level and the benefits as well as the gains of this project on the socio-economic lives of Lagosians cannot be over-emphasised,” Alabi said.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Hon. Muslim Folami said the project was in fulfillment of the campaign promise made to the people by the Governor.

Folami said that the next phase will commence after the completion of the first phase, assuring that Governor Ambode would not relent until all the inner roads in the State are fully rehabilitated.

Pre-colonial Igbo political organization was based on semiautonomous communities, devoid of kings or governing chiefs. With the exception of towns such as Onitsha,  which had kings called Obis, and places like Nri and Arochukwu, which had priest kings known as Ezes, most Igbo village governments were ruled solely by an assembly of the common people. Although titleholders were respected because of their accomplishments,   they were never revered as kings, but often performed special functions given to them by such these assemblies. This way of governing was immensely different from most other communities of Western Africa, and only shared by the Ewe of Ghana.  Igbo secret societes also had a ceremonial script called Nsibidi. Igbos had a calendar in which a week has four days. A month has seven weeks and thirteen months a year. The last month had an extra day. They also had mathematics called Okwe and Mkpisi and a saving and loans bank system called Isusu.

A lot of it looks nice. However, your borders have to be redone. Delta State should be part of Yoruba territory. If you plan your borders correctly, you will get majority Yoruba support. But as it was during the civil war, the Biafran army was going too deep into the mid-western province, and thats where you lost a lot of support.

@jokers, I know there would never be a good split. Edo would not vote to be part of Biafra for starters. I would advice you not to cross the river for your own good. Let us hypothetically break up the nation and see what we can come up with. Let us decide on the Biafran territory. If it can be done here maybe it can be actualized. I'm sure it cant work though. I don't want people to carry the torch of secession into reality because it will only cause distability in this very young country called Nigeria.

Would the government of Nigeria not interprete these acts as seditious if it finds out?  Why is Nwazuruke, the putative head of MASSOB, languishing in detention if government condones these acts of lawlessness? Mr Administrator, please do not let those who does not believe in the corporate existence of Nigeria use your platform to cause problems for the country. They can go set up a website or join others who already have a website for this propaganda to air their views.  That way Nairaland will not be used as a platform to launch their seditious ambition.

My Grandmother told me stories of the time, war and all she witnessed , i need to go read some more about this part of our history, like i say interesting. Y'all should relax, those currencies are one of the aftermath of the civil war, they are 1967 currencies. Its quality is so messed up that a lil breeze is gonna tear it off.its just a mixture of paper and chemicals.

I have heard quite a lot about the traditional Igbo governance. Can somebody point out how exactly it functioned? Maybe it would be a good example to emulate to make politics truly representative

i don't get it. biafra didn't last (did it even exsist), but yet you here biafra this, biafra that. we have a flag and currencies already. i'm igbo and if the calculation is right and biafra becomes its own nation, i would be biafra but i would never consider mayself a biafran because i grew up knowing nigeria and that green and white. and that's it.

Did Tinubu Forge His Certificate?

Justice Saliu Seidu of a Federal High Court in Lagos, yesterday rejected an application filed by one Dr. Adegbola Dominic, asking the court to compel the Inspector- General of Police (IG) and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State to re-open the case of false statement on oath and false declarations initially lodged by the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, against former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The applicant, (Dominic) had in a motion ex-parte brought pursuant to Sections, 6, 214, 215 of the Constitution as well as Order 34 Rule 3 of Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009 and Section 4 of Police Act, sought leave of the court to serve the Motion of Notice and other court processes on the Inspector-General of Police through the Lagos annex office.
But, Justice Seidu in his ruling that lasted less than 30 minutes held that the applicant was out of time in filing the application.
The court held that Section 34 Rule 4 of Federal High Court stipulates that such application must be brought within six months after Tinubu vacated office as governor of Lagos State.
Justice Seidu held that; “The applicant did not do anything since 2007 till now. There is need to comply with stipulated rules of court. This matter is grossly out of time and the prayer sought cannot be granted, it is hereby refused.”
The applicant had in his motion ex-parte dated December 27, 2012, filed by his lawyer, R. Gilbert, sought for an order of mandamus compelling the IG and the Commissioner of Police Lagos State to investigate forthwith his application and the application filed by late Gani Fawehinmi over complaint of crime allegedly committed by Tinubu.
The applicant wants the court to declare that the police have statutory power to investigate crime and bring suspects before a court of competent jurisdiction.
In a 15-paragraph affidavit in support of the motion deposed to by the applicant, he averred that sometimes and prior to 1999 governorship elections of Lagos State conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Tinubu, then a candidate, filed together with INEC Form (F001), an affidavit on oath in respect of lost certificates before the Commissioner for Oaths at the High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja on December 29, 1998.
The deponent further stated that the affidavit on oath allegedly sworn to by Tinubu contained the following; “That he (Tinubu) attended St. Paul School Aroloya, Lagos Island which school never existed.
“That the deponent attended Government College, Ibadan between 1965 and 1968, a claim which the authorities and Old Boys’ Association of Government College, Ibadan debunked. “That the deponent attended Richard Dale College, Chicago between 1968 and 1971 which he did not.
“That the deponent attended the University of Chicago in the United States between 1972 and 1976 and obtained a B.Sc. degree in economics which claim was allegedly false.
The applicant added that when the late Fawehinmi initiated a suit in court in 1999 for an order of mandamus to compel the police to investigate the criminal allegations, the High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court held that Bola Tinubu, then governor of Lagos State by virtue of Section 308 (1) (a) (b) (c) of the 1999 Constitution enjoyed immunity from civil and criminal investigations and proceedings.
The applicant averred that Tinubu had left office as governor since 2007 and no longer enjoys immunity hence the police ought to have commenced investigation on the alleged crime.
He added that he wrote a letter to the Inspector-General of Police (1st respondent) on November 1, 2012 asking him to reopen the case, but he bluntly refused hence he filed the suit to compel the respondents perform their statutory duties.
